Man From Out Of Town

Man From Out Of Town
Bill Morrissey
From the album "Inside"

Capo 3 - Play like G-Bm-C-G

The Ghouse burned down on a stormy night
and they Bmnever did find out why.
I just Cstood alone beneath the silver maple
Am trying to keep my cigarettes Gdry.

Waiting for the firemen,
I Bmcouldn't save a thing,
And deep inCside my home above the roar of the flame
I Am swore I heard the telephone Gring.

The Grain let up and we worked till dawn,
just Bmme and the firemen,
And when they Ccut the power and the lines went dead,
I Am never got called aGgain.

The Emhouse was gone by the Bmbreak of dawn,
the Cair was cold and Ggrey.
I just G set off down the road Am alone,
but it's Calways gone that Gway. C/G G C/G G

GSo young, so long ago
I Bmthought I heard that train,
CCalling out my name,
At Am least it sounded like my Gname.

Just a boy with no direction,
I Bmleft my home behind,
And the Csky changed color
once I Am crossed that town Gline.

GMy good friends did the best they could
to Bmhold me down with them,
But I Ctook one look, and I packed my bags
and I Am slipped around the Gbend.

The Emlessons came from Bmleft and right,
the Cfirst night out I G found,
The laws were not meant to protect
the Cman from out of Gtown.

GThere was a cold street on the sea coast,
I once Bmtried to call home.
Where the C church steeples rose up
above the Am town like broken Gbones.

Drinking whiskey with the catholic priest
one Bmnight in the recotory hall,
He just Cshook his head and said
"You Am never know when Jesus Gcalls."

Then his Emeyes got wide and he Bmlooked around
but he Cjust could not exGplain.
It was like he heard the sound of Jesus laugh
the Cway I heard that Gtrain. C/G G C/G G

GNow the years and the faces blur,
still I Bmcan remember some.
There were Cwomen washing windows,
there were Am salesgirls chewing Ggum.

There were curses in the shapes of old men,
Bmkneeling in the pews.
There are Cthings in this life
a man Am just does not get to Gchoose.

GSo, finally I found a home
in a Bmtiny mountain town,
Just a Csimple place to keep me dry
when the Am rain came pouring Gdown.

A Emplace to sleep, the Bmrent was cheap,
brick Cwalls and a new slate Groof.
The landlord said "You'll be safe here.
This Chouse is
fireGproof."
