The hostage

1. "Hallo?"
"Lady we've just kidnapped your husband,
have 100,000 dollar ready by tomorrow night,
and lady : no police or you'll never see your husband alive again." "Hallo?"

    Am ~ Am
I remember standing there so petrified,
            D F Am
my hand frozen to the phone,

as a stranger's words echoed in my ears,
     D F Am
and chilled me to the bone.
         F C E Am
Some dark tragedy had come right home to me,
        F C E E7
taking out my man, and his life was in their hands.

 - Am G
He was a hostage, a hostage,
       F Dm E
his life was at the mercy of their hands.
       Am G
He was a hostage, a hostage,
F Dm E - Am
his life depending on their goddamn hands.

2. "Hallo?"
"Lady, here's your husband, proves that we're not playing any games.
Hi Honey, listen, I'm okay, just make sure you do whatever
they tell you, and whatever you do don't go to the police!"

    Am ~ Am
Well, I couldn't raise that kind of money fast,
         D F Am
so I was left no other choice.

So I called the police and they came in fast,
      D F Am
saying, "Leave it all to us !
         F C E Am
Just do as you're told, the ransom's in this bag,
          F C E E7
we'll watch over you, and we'll have your husband back soon."

- - - Am G
He was a hostage, a hostage,
  F Dm E
his life was at the mercy of their hands.
      Am G
He was a hostage, a hostage,
  F Dm E - Am
his life depending on their goddamn hands.

3. "Hallo?" "Listen very carefully, lady !
Drive out to the abandoned shack on Highway 16, throw the package
of money out the window and keep driving. And remember, lady, no police!"

Am ~ Am
Well, my heart was heavy as I made that drive,
      D F Am
I was sure something was wrong.

I soon found the shack, I threw out the bag
      D F Am
and I just kept driving on.
        F C E Am
Then the shots rang out and I turned my car about,
       F C E E7
on the ground one lay, but the other had gotten away.

- - - Am G
He was a hostage, a hostage,
       F Dm E
his life was at the mercy of their hands.
       Am G
He was a hostage, a hostage,
 F Dm E - Am
his life depending on their goddamn hands.

"Well they found my husband a few days later.
    Yes, the funeral's tomorrow."
