Brother

Brother – Peter Katz and Royal Wood
transcribed by Andrew Bown
17 April 2014
Notes:
- Anything in () brackets is an instruction, not lyrics
- Lyric placement is intentional; approximately where the words fit to the music
- All C and F chords are C/G and F/C respectively.
- All C/B and Am/B are bass note steps from C to Am and Am to C.
- Strum pattern is mostly downward strums, but improvise on the refrain sections a bit.
- Strum rhythm is 12312312 (put emphasis on number 1) most of the time. (speak the numbers twice
as fast as you tap your foot to the music to get the feel).
- Bridge is different (arpeggiated sort of) – check the recording.
- Add a tambourine hit on beat 4 most of the way through the song for authenticity

Intro: (palm muted)
C Csus2 C Csus2 C Csus2 C C/B

Verse 1: (all partial palm muted)
Am Am/B C F C C/B
I caught a vision of you looking in the mirror

Am Am/B C F C C/B
A picture I had seen before me all these years

Am Am/B C F C C/B
I’d always wanted me to follow where you walked

Am Am/B C F C C/B
To be the image of this brother I had watched

Verse 2: (same as verse 1)
Well I know dear brother that the sand it falls away
Into the hour glass with every passing day
We chose our own roads but no matter what the cost

Am Am/B C F C
I stand before you saying no, nothing was lost.

Refrain: (no palm mute)
(pickup) We may have
F G C Csus2 C
followed beating hearts and settled down. We may have

F G C Csus2 C
built a life away in another town. But blood is

F G Am Am/B C
thicker than the water in the ground. You are my

F G(let ring) C Csus2 C C/B (replace C/B w/ Csus2 going into bridge)
brother with my brother I am found.

Verse 3: (palm mute)
I have that photo where I’m cradled in your arms
I’m still that boy now offering shelter from the storm
Well I release you from your standing of the guard
I push your boat away and know you will go far

Refrain (same as before)

Bridge: (switch up strum pattern; see notes)
Em Fmaj7 C Gsus4
At rest or in motion that we keep

Em Fmaj7 C Gsus4
Inside tucked away with lock and key

Em Fmaj7 C C/B Am
Some things in this life were made to last. Like

F G(let ring) C Csus2 C (back to down strumming/palm mute on 1st C)
brother when I see you, no time has passed

Last Refrain: (start palm muted)
We may have followed beating hearts and settled down.
We may have built a life away in another town.
(remove mute; give'r)
But blood is thicker than the water in the ground.
You are my
F G Am Am/B C
brother with my brother I am found. You are my

F G Am Am/B C
brother with my brother I am found. You are my

F G(let ring)
brother with my brother I am found.
