Lay Your Head Down

Lay Your Head Down
Brian Byrne (music)
Glenn Close (lyrics)
Performed by Sinead O'Connor

F F6 F Em7
Sing to me softly your tales of woe,
      Am7 F6/D F/D G/B G
I’ll cradle you close ly, I won’t let go.
      F F6 F Em7
I’ll speak to you gently of what I know
F Dm7* Dm9* G Gsus2 G
Don’t you cry.

C F F6 F Gsus2 G6
Lay your head down dar……..ling,
Am7 D G6 Gsus2 G
The moon is sailing by.
C F6 Fmaj7 G/B G6/B
The stars are softly shin ing
Am7 D Dadd9 G/B G
The tide is full and high.

G/B F G6 Em Em7 Am7 Am/D
We’ll fly to the edge, not as distant as it seems,
F Em Am7 D7
And maybe we’ll find there the key to your dreams.
                   C F F6 G6 G/B G6/B
So you just lay your head down dar…ling,
F (Fb6) G G7 C
Sleep now, la la la la la.

F F6 F Em7 Em
Winds blow, rains fall,
            Am7 F F6 Am Am7sus4 G Gsus2 G
But it’s warm by the fire’s light.
F F6 F6/maj7 Em7
Hush, don’t you see? You’re here with me, and there’s
F Dm7* Dm9* G Gsus2 G (G7)
dawn at the end of the night.

*You can substitute D and D9 for these two Dm chords, especially on the second verse with this structure (“Winds blow”).

Repeat from “Lay” to “la la”

Comments and corrections welcome.

The original chord placements are basically correct, I think, but U-G typically changes them when it reformats contributions, so they probably will need some tweaking by users.

A lot of the extended chords are passing notes that could be omitted for a simpler arrangement

To me, this is an interesting song because it seems to be both a “folk” song and a composed song. It starts out with an F chord and perhaps in another key, maybe G (because it seems to resolve to G on the first verse)? And then it changes to the base key, which is C. This may be entirely wrong as my music theory is weak, so I’d be interested to hear from others who could correct my errors and explain more about the structure of the song.
